Year after year, the people here celebrate these special occasions. Around St Martin’s Day (11 November), for example, it’s customary to taste this year’s vintage at the vineyards. The majorly planted grape variety here is Blaufränkisch. This red wine exhibits a pronounced spicy and mineral character. Fruity white wines, mainly Welschriesling and Pinot blanc, are crafted in the towns of Eisenberg, Deutsch Schützen and Rechnitz.

The famous Uhudler wine is characteristic of Southern Burgenland. It’s a delicacy to be found only here. This hybrid grape variety produces wine that smells intensively of wild strawberries. Many people love it!

The Art of Winemaking at Its Best

At the heart of viticulture in Burgenland: world-class red wines. The wine regions in the north, around Lake Neusiedl, are famous for producing premium Zweigelt wines of outstanding quality.

The soils in Central Burgenland are thick with a high amount of clay. Ideal for growing Blaufränkisch (blue Frankish), a more challenging red variety. It’s the majorly grown grape here.

Furthermore, the wine regions in Burgenland also produce award-winning cuvees and excellent white wines. A speciality to be found only in Southern Burgenland: the Uhudler wine with its intense, fruity flavours.
