Welcome to the Vienna Woods!

They invite you to engage in outdoor activities, enjoy culinary delights, take a relaxing country walk, see cultural gems and visit unique attractions. Immerse yourself in the world of the Vienna Woods, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with large forests, lush meadows, lovely footpaths, secret spots, impressive monuments, great stories and exquisite delicacies just outside Austria’s capital city.
Encompassing 80 municipalities, the Vienna Woods extend from Klosterneuburg in the north via the Wiental valley and Elsbeere region in the west to the spa region in the Vienna Woods (“Thermenregion”) on the southern outskirts of Vienna. The latter is also an important wine region with charming villages such as Gumpoldskirchen, Pfaffstätten, Sooß Baden and Bad Vöslau. The Helenental and Triestingtal valleys delimit the region further in the south. In the east, it is bounded by the borders of the city of Vienna.

Wine in Spring, Culture in Summer

Spring is not only the season when temperatures slowly begin to rise in the Vienna Woods. Traditionally, it’s also time to present the new vintage. Winemakers organise wine festivals, open their cellars to visitors and much more.
Roses are bursting with colour in the “Rosarium”, a garden in Baden. Marvel at the Queen of Flowers in all its glory! Among the cultural events taking place in summer: the photography festival “La Gacilly” in Baden, the literature festival “Schwimmender Salon”, the outdoor opera in Klosterneuburg or cultural events in the vineyard (“Kultur beim Winzer”).

Autumn Hues and Culinary Delights from Winegrowers

The Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve is particularly picturesque in autumn when the trees glow in red, gold and russet hues. It’s the ideal time to explore the countless pilgrimage routes, hiking trails and cycle routes - from easy to demanding ones. You can reach many of them by public transport. A lot of events take place in autumn. Highlight: the food festival “Genussmeile” (“mile of indulgence”). Ten kilometres of the hiking trail along the First Vienna Mountain Spring Pipeline  are turned into the world’s longest bar. This is your chance to sample wine, cider and culinary delights from about 90 local winegrowers. When temperatures begin to drop, the thermal spas in Baden and Bad Vöslau are inviting places for a relaxing getaway.

Tasty Vienna Woods

The hillsides of the Vienna Woods and the spa region are home to interesting local wine varieties such as Zierfandler and Rotgipfler. The Vienna Woods used to be the hunting grounds of the House of Habsburg. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise that venison is part of every menu here. Delicious wild mushrooms and herbs from the forest are also important locally sourced ingredients.
Chequers are another delicacy that’s typical of the region. The small fruit grows on large trees (also called wild service tree) and is used for making fruit spirit, fruit brandy and jam.
“Heurige”, local wine taverns, are worth a visit at any time of the year.
