About Us
A warm welcome to Furtmühle!
Our farm is located in the beautiful Mühlviertel region. Running just next to our house, the river "Große Mühl" is an inviting place to swim, calm down and relax. A vast lawn for sunbathing with barbecue and manifold activities for children guarantee unforgettable holidays! Furtmühle is the ideal starting point for hikes, bike tours and other sports whether in winter or in summer.
Our farm is located within the Bohemian Forest Holiday Region ("Böhmerwald"). The Nordwaldkammweg (a European long-distance hiking trail) as well as the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago) coming from the direction of the Czech Republic both go next to our farm. The well-known ski resort Hochficht is only a 20 minutes' drive. In our neighbouring villages Aigen-Schlägl, known beyond the borders for its monastery and Haslach an der Mühl, the famous centre of weaving mills, you will find plenty of things to discover.
We love our farm and its surroundings. Over the centuries, our farm has become what it is today thanks to a great amount of dedication and passion for detail.
Back then, when salt from our region was carried to Bohemia with horse-drawn carts, both horse and cart had to cross the river in the ford. This gave rise to our farm's name Furtmühle ("ford mill"). By the end of the 18th century, our house has grown into a tavern including a sawmill and a mill for grinding grain. You can still wonder at the historic sawmill and the grain mill as well as a range of tools used for farming in the old days.
The charming vaulted hall in our house also accommodates a rustic wine cellar The cider cellar is another beautiful building belonging to our farm. We produce tasty cider from the fruit in our orchard garden. You are welcome to help us collect apples, press cider and, of course, take a sip!
We care a lot about sustainability. Our houses are heated with woodchips which are produced from wood grown in our own forest. Since 1999, the river "Große Mühl" powers our own hydroelectric power station which supplies us with electricity.
